Can freelancer tax filing be automated?
Half of it, and it is the half that takes the evening. The arithmetic, the currency conversion, the regime choice and the field-by-field script can all be automated. The act of filing cannot, and any service that promises otherwise is describing a person rather than a program.
There is no button at FBR's end
FBR publishes no public interface that lets software submit an individual return on your behalf. Returns are filed on IRIS, by a human, signed in as themselves. That is not a gap a clever developer can code around; it is the design.
You can see how tight it is from a much smaller job. Checking whether someone is on the Active Taxpayer List, which is public information about a single person, still has to be done by reading FBR's own lookup page, with an SMS lookup as the fallback when that breaks. If reading one public status is that manual, nobody is being handed a programmatic way to submit a full return under your name.
What "we file it for you" actually is
When a service files automatically, someone at that service signs in to IRIS as you and types. That is a real service and a perfectly legitimate one. An accountant does exactly that, and charges Rs 5,000 to Rs 15,000 for it. The problem is not the work, it is the word: calling it automation hides what you are handing over.
What you hand over is your IRIS login. Worth knowing before you do:
- It is the same login that holds your past returns, your wealth statement and your personal data, not a scoped key that only files this year.
- A password you have shared is a password you cannot un-share. It stays shared until you change it, and most people never do.
- The return is filed in your name. If a figure is wrong, it is your notice, your liability and your explanation to give.
None of that makes the service dishonest. It makes it a person doing manual work, which should be priced and described as manual work. Ask any provider plainly whether a human logs in as you. A straight answer is a good sign.
The arithmetic is the part worth automating
Almost none of the evening you dread is spent clicking submit. It goes on reconciling twelve months of receipts, and every bit of that is genuinely mechanical:
- Reading the exports. Payoneer, Wise, Upwork and Fiverr files are recognised from their header rows, and a bank statement PDF is read in your own browser.
- Converting the currency. Every receipt at the State Bank rate for its own date, not one convenient annual rate.
- Removing duplicates. The same money appearing in both a platform export and a bank statement is matched and counted once.
- Comparing the regimes. Section 154A at 1%, or 0.25% with PSEB, against normal slabs, with the cheaper one named.
- Crediting withholding. Your certificates are totalled, and the months with no certificate are listed so you can chase them.
- Reconciling wealth. Opening net wealth plus income, less expenses and tax, against what you declared, checked to a 5% tolerance.
- Writing the script. Which IRIS tab, which field, which figure, in order, with your numbers already in the sentence.
That is what FilerKaro does, and it is the whole product. What is left for you is confirming the rows it was unsure about, answering the residence question, pasting the figures, clicking submit and keeping the acknowledgement number. Minutes, at the end of work that used to be a weekend.
Two questions worth asking
- Is there an app that files my tax return automatically in Pakistan?
- Not in the sense the word usually means. Software can compute the whole return and write out every field, but the return is submitted on IRIS under your own login. A service that says it files automatically is describing a person who signs in as you.
- What can tax software actually automate for a freelancer?
- Reading your Payoneer, Wise, Upwork and Fiverr exports, converting every receipt at the State Bank rate for its own date, removing duplicates across sources, comparing section 154A against normal slabs, totalling your withholding certificates, reconciling the wealth statement, and naming the tab, the field and the figure to type into IRIS.
Automate the maths, keep the login
If you want someone else to do all of it, hire an accountant and know that is what you are buying. If you want the arithmetic done properly and your own credentials to stay yours, that is FilerKaro: Rs 2,500 for tax year 2026, one time, and the estimate before it is free.
